The Spiders will vacate their current premises at the end of the 2012/13 term as a new running track is put in for the Glasgow 2014 games.

Unable to use Lesser Hampden – which will become a training venue for athletes – Queen's Park had other options for ground-sharing including Firhill.

But Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium – with artificial 4G pitch and capacity of 10,171 – is in pole position.

A Queen's spokesman said: "Discussions have been going on for a considerable time. We've known for two years that Hampden would be shut, but nothing has been finalised yet."
