STEVEN THOMPSON has signed a one-year extension with St Mirren. The striker, who has been with the club since 2011, had been out of contract but has agreed a new deal to play in the SPFL Championship next season. The 36 year-old endured a miserable campaign last year, missing large chunks through injury and then becoming embroiled in the training ground incident that saw midfielder John McGinn struck in the leg with a training pole. He hopes to enjoy a better year ahead.
“After the disappointments of last year I am super motivated to make sure I enjoy this season and help St Mirren challenge in the Championship,” said the forward. “Last season was hugely disappointing missing half the season through injury but with a good pre-season behind me this summer and having worked really hard over the close season I am confident I can be an asset to the team.”
The forward joins up with new manager Ian Murray, a one-time team-mate at Rangers. “I am delighted to have Thommo on board for the season ahead,” said Murray. “I know him very well having played together in the past and know he will be a big goal threat for us in the new season, and his experience will be invaluable for the younger players.”
