Rangers have announced that defender Darren McGregor has left the club by mutual consent.

McGregor made 50 appearances for the Ibrox club last season, scoring on five occasions and earning both the Player of the Year and Player's Player of the Year awards.

He has found appearances harder to come by this term though, with new Rangers manager Mark Warburton preferring the central defensive partnership of new signings Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson.

McGregor started his career at Cowdenbeath, and had a spell at Arniston Rangers before returning to the Fife side.

He won a move to St Mirren, where his form attracted the interest of then Rangers manager Ally McCoist.

The 30-year-old joined the Ibrox side last summer, and was one of the bright spots in an otherwise dismal campaign with his assured displays at the back.

He has failed to feature in any of the club's six matches so far this campaign though, and leaves in order to find regular first-team football.

A Rangers spokesperson said: "Darren leaves with the club's best wishes for a successful future."
