Partick Thistle’s goal-scoring hero David Amoo says that no one inside Firhill is getting carried away after their emphatic win over Dundee United.

The Jags finally bagged their first win of the campaign at the tenth attempt, leapfrogging United to get off the bottom of the table in the process.

Now winger Amoo says that Thistle must keep winning to drag themselves out of trouble.

“We felt like it was a must-win game, it was so important,” he said.

“You don’t want to go into the international break bottom of the league and losing contact with the teams above you.

“It was a great opportunity for us to close the gap, so it was very important to get the three points. We needed the win, that’s for sure.

“It’s been a tough season so far, not winning a game for so long was difficult for everyone, even though we were playing well in most of the games we just weren’t scoring.

“Everyone was really pleased just to get over the line on Saturday and it was a good win in the end.

“We played well and it’s definitely important to push on from it now because we’re still down there and we have to keep up the momentum.

“Getting out of the relegation area is our main focus at the moment, we’re certainly not getting carried away.

“We understand we’ve got another tough game after the break against St Johnstone, but we desperately want to get out of the situation that we’re in.

“It’s given us confidence though that we can win games, and that we can score goals.

“When you haven’t scored a goal for so long, as a team you start to wonder where the next goal is going to come from.

“Scoring three against Dundee United has certainly boosted our confidence for the St Johnstone game. It’ll be a tough away game because they’re doing really well, but we won’t be resting on our laurels and we’ll be going there to try to win.”

With Motherwell’s Ian Baraclough and United’s Jackie McNamara losing their jobs in recent weeks, Thistle manager Alan Archibald admitted that he would have come under pressure had they lost Saturday’s game.

Amoo insists though that everybody in the Thistle camp were always behind him.

“I don’t think anyone genuinely felt like the manager was going to be in danger of losing his job,” he said.

“It was a tough start but we were always confident that we would come through it. Everyone stuck together, the whole team of players and the management, we all just wanted to work together to get that first win.”

Amoo scored his first goal for the club in the narrow defeat at Motherwell, and followed that up with the all-important opener against United.

With that particular monkey off his back, he is sure that he can now show the Jags support his best form.

He admitted: “It was a huge relief for me personally. It’s tough when you’re a new player and the team’s not winning, it’s hard to settle in.

“It was very difficult on a personal level because if I wasn’t scoring and the team was winning then you might say that I’m still trying to find my feet, but with the team not winning and me not scoring then it gets very difficult.

“I was so relieved to get off the mark against Motherwell, even though we didn’t get the result. It was a huge weight off my shoulders and I think that showed on Saturday.

“As a general experience though I’ve really enjoyed Scottish football so far, and obviously if we keep winning I’ll enjoy it even more!”
