Gary Locke insists he will not be boring his Kilmarnock players with the tale of his one lone victory over Celtic in Glasgow - because he wants them to make their own history.

The former Hearts and Killie midfielder sampled just one away victory over the Hoops during his playing days and even then it was only the briefest of tastes.

He came on as an 88th-minute substitute for matchwinner David Hagen just seconds after the striker struck the only goal in Hearts' narrow 1-0 triumph at Hampden way back in April 1995 while Parkhead was being renovated.

Killie as a club have had little more luck at the home of the Scottish champions, with the 2012 victory masterminded by former boss Kenny Shiels their only success in the east end of Glasgow in the last 60 years.

But Locke is not worrying about the past as he prepares for Saturday's Ladbrokes Premiership trip to face Ronny Deila's men.

He said: "I've only beaten Celtic in Glasgow once as a player and the club's record there isn't great either. But then again, I don't think there's many clubs in Scotland that can say they have a fantastic record of winning.

"I won there with Hearts but never managed it during my time with Kilmarnock unfortunately.

"That just shows you how difficult it is a place to go and win. The Celtic teams I faced as a player were unbelievable and it is the same this time. They are a great set of players with quality throughout.

"But I don't think it's daunting. For me, it's a game to look forward to. When you play the Old Firm, everyone expects the Old Firm to win, so all the expectation levels will be on Celtic this weekend.

"Have I told the players about my victory there? Not really. I don't tend to talk about my career to the players. It's about these lads in the present.

"We have a really young team and my ambition for them is that they do really well for Kilmarnock and hopefully go on to play at the highest level possible. If they want to get to the highest level then these are the games they should be desperate to perform well in."

After a nightmare start, Killie were climbing towards the top six but recent defeats to Motherwell and St Johnstone have been a set-back.

However, Locke said: "We will go there and have a go because there's no point sitting back as you'll just get beat anyway. So we will go to Parkhead looking to attack and give it our best shot."
