Darren Young says that he still can’t believe his Albion Rovers side lost the New Year Lanarkshire derby to Airdrieonians.

Young felt that his side dominated the game, but they failed to kill off the visitors and passed up numerous gilt-edged chances after going ahead early on through John Gemmell.

They were to pay the price, as an unfortunate own goal from Alan Reid and a last-gasp James Lister header snatched the points for the Diamonds.

“I was absolutely gutted,” he said.

“It was just one of those games where you wonder how the hell you got beat.

“We played so well and had five or six one-on-ones with the goalie, and they’re keeper was man-of-the-match.

“When you’re missing chances like that though you start to think it might be one of those days, and then they score from an o.g. which was the first real danger to our goal.

“It was really disappointing and then when they score with a couple of minutes remaining to nick it it’s a killer, but these things happen in football and we’ve probably played worse in a few games this season and come away with three points.

“That’s this game and the one against Forfar last time out though that should have been put to bed and we’ve been punished. It’s probably cost us five points.

“It’s a sickener and you are gutted, but I’d be more worried if we were losing terrible goals and not creating chances. As it is, we’re losing a few unlucky ones to deflections like the one against Forfar and we’re not being clinical enough at the other end.

“I said to the boys after the game that we were the better team, the fitter team, I couldn’t fault their work-rate or desire and their attitude. Everything we’re working on in training they are giving us, it’s just that final bit to finish things off.

“If we keep up the standard of performance though then that will come and we will have a right good season.”

Despite a good start to life in League One, Young admits that he may look to strengthen should the opportunity arise.

“We were looking at one or two guys to come in and help the squad but it doesn’t look like they will be coming off, which is disappointing,” he said.

“We’re always on the lookout though and if we can get somebody in that will improve the squad then we’ll try to do that.”
