JACK BAIRD is out to turn the Paisley 2021 Stadium into a FORTRESS after St Mirren finally got their first league win at home last time out.

The Buddies have struggled to find any form on their own patch this season with last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Alloa Athletic causing the monkey to finally fall off their backs.

St Mirren currently sit eighth in the Ladbrokes Championship as they eye grabbing on to a Premiership play-off place.

And Baird believes that can happen if they can build of some consistency – and more importantly points – at their own stadium.

“Now we are trying to take as many points as we can at home. If we can turn it into a fortress that would be brilliant,” said the 19-year-old.

“Our away form is better than when we are at home, so if we can improve in Paisley that would be ideal.

“When it’s happening you don’t want to think about it but now you are relieved. It’s a monkey off our backs and we can concentrate more on the games.

“When you think back to some of the ones where we have conceded late goals. Obviously you look back at the Falkirk game when we were 2-0 up and that could have been a home win right there. It would have been finished with.

“It’s taken us a wee while but it was a good win to get.”

St Mirren head into a strange double header this afternoon with the power of that victory behind them.

Alex Rae’s men will go up against Queen of the South in Paisley before repeating the fixture in Dumfries the week later after today’s meeting was previously postponed.

Two victories would take them away from the danger area and right back into the mix to finish in the top four, and Baird is ready to grab the opportunity with both hands.

“In the league we have won three out of five so if we can carry that on it will be brilliant,” said the centre-half. “They are a team we have beaten away before. They still will be hard to beat.

“It’s always a target. I think we could aim for fourth. It is a good thing to shoot for even if you fall short, you need to aim as high as you can and see where it goes from there.”

He added: “We now have them two weeks in a row so we want to get a good start, a solid win at home and then take it to them down in Dumfries.

“It feels a bit like a cup tie. It’s weird to play the same team two weeks in a row but you need to take it one game at a time, get a good start then build on it.

“We are looking to try and win both games, just like we do in every game. But we will take the first one and then concentrate on the next one.”
