Darren Young has urged his Albion Rovers side not to give up on their unlikely dream of reaching the League One promotion play-offs.

A draw against Cowdenbeath last week made sure that at the very worst, Rovers will maintain their place in the division next season.

Despite needing Stranraer to slip up in both of their matches as well as winning their own to make the top four though, Young is clinging on to hope that his men can overcome the odds.

“It’s going to be difficult (to reach the play-offs), we’re not going to kid ourselves, but if we win our final two matches and results go elsewhere for us then who knows what can happen,” he said.

“We’re desperate to get the victory and pile the pressure on Stranraer and hope that Brechin can do us a favour and take points off them.”

Rovers face a tough test today against Forfar in what could be their last match of the season at Cliftonhill.

The Loons can go down if results go against them, and Young is aware that they will be fighting for their lives.

“They will be up for this as they know that if they lose again they could be relegated,” he said. “It’s a massive match for both teams.”

Reflecting on a season that has exceeded expectations, Young conceded that the only disappointing thing is that they haven’t managed to add significantly to attendances despite their success.

He is hoping that the entertainment served up this year can encourage a few more from the local community to come along and support his side next season.

He said: “The fans that turn up week in week out have been absolutely outstanding for us this season.

“Deep down though, after having another amazing season, we’re really hoping that next season we can get a better turn out at matches.

“Last year we won the league, this year we’ve been fighting it out in the play-off positions for most of the season whilst having the smallest budget in the league.

“We just hope it’s made more people want to come along to Cliftonhill and support a successful team. It’s been an absolute roller coaster ride and anyone who has come along will tell you that they’ve been entertained from start to finish.

“If we manage to get a few hundred extra fans through the door, it would make a massive difference financially to us, we could potentially enjoy even more success.”
