He has been tipped to become the first Irishman to be on the books at both Celtic and Rangers but Hamilton Accies goalie Michael McGovern is eyeing a move to English football.

The 31-year-old was in fine form for the New Douglas Park club at the weekend, producing saves at vital stages as they registered the 3-1 win over Dundee United at Tannadice that means they are guaranteed to stay in the Premiership if they beat Kilmarnock next weekend.

His club form allied to his involvement in Northern Ireland’s remarkable Euro 2016 qualifying campaign has inevitably attracted interest and while Martin Canning, the Accies manager, has said they are keen to keep him he also respected his right to keep his options open when his contract runs out this summer and said that if he leaves he will go with the club’s blessing.

Aberdeen as well as Rangers have been reported as showing interest, but McGovern claimed to be in no rush to make a decision as he looks forward to exciting times over the coming weeks.

“I haven’t thought too much about it,” he said.

“I just took a stance that I was going to wait until the end of the season and obviously I’m ambitious and I want to play at as high a level as I can and I want to have as good a career as I can and be the best I can be, but I don’t discount Hamilton either because everybody’s been so good to me here and I’ve absolutely loved my time here.

“I need to speak to my agent. He said he’ll speak to me at the end of the season.”

Having begun his senior career at Celtic in 2001 McGovern admitted to being particularly interested in sampling a new experience with a move to English football, however.

“It’s just something different,” he said.

“I’ve always had the ambition to play down there because I’ve been in Scotland so long and don’t get me wrong I love playing in Scotland, but it’s just something that before I finish playing football I’d like to try. I don’t know when it’ll be or if I’ll get the opportunity maybe.

“I’ve been in Scotland for 15 years now, but the opportunities need to come up and I need to weigh it up, but I’ve got a good thing at Hamilton as well, so we just have to wait and see.”
