Chris Duggan is hoping that his quickfire goal against Cowdenbeath can be the platform for Queen’s Park to fire their way into the play-off final.

The on-loan Partick Thistle striker scored after just 25 seconds at Hampden on Wednesday night as the Spiders earned a 2-0 first-leg lead to take to Central Park today.

The only regret he has is that they aren’t taking an even greater advantage with them to Fife.

He said: “That’s definitely one of the quicker goals I’ve ever scored! It was a great start and it set us up very nicely for the rest of the game.

“It was almost too early for it to be a goal, so it was almost like ‘did that just actually happen?’

“Half of the Cowdenbeath players were probably still in the changing room. Paul Woods picked up the ball and fed me very nicely, and luckily I was able to put it in the net.

“We know it’s only half-way done, but there was a lot of encouraging things to take from tonight’s game.

“It’s unfortunate that it’s not dead and buried, but we’ve set ourselves up very nicely going into the second leg.

“We knew going into the game that even before the playoffs started then we’d fancy ourselves against anybody, whether that be Clyde, Elgin or Cowdenbeath.”

Despite the dominant nature of Queen’s Park’s performance in midweek against their League One opponents, Duggan has warned his teammates to expect a reaction from a wounded Cowdenbeath side.

He is confident though that if they reach the levels they are capable of, then they can take a huge step towards promotion.

“They’ve got good form at home and we know it’s going to be a tough game,” he said.

“It’s a different set-up now, we came in tonight on a level playing field, but on Saturday they know what they need to do and we expect them to come out all guns blazing.

“It’s about us though and approaching it the same way we did tonight, and if we can execute what we work on then we’ll be alright.”
