HEARTS have been granted approval by Edinburgh City Council to build a new £12m main stand at Tynecastle.

The club received planning permission from a public hearing at Edinburgh City Chambers on Wednesday and demolition work will begin on the site in November.

Construction of the new state-of-the-art structure, which will hold 7290 people, will get underway in December and replace the current stand that was built almost a century ago in 1919.

As a result, Tynecastle's overall capacity will increase from 17,529 to 20,099 and the renovation is expected to be completed by September 2017.

Jambos owner Ann Budge and chief operating officer Scot Gardiner represented Hearts at the hearing, which lasted just over an hour.
