The treble is always symbolic for Celtic, particularly as Jock Stein and Martin O’Neill are the only managers to achieve the feat, so Brendan Rodgers would obviously love to join that select group.

I would imagine that from a business point of view though, Celtic will already be thinking about the Champions League next season.

I know that it will be tempting for people to assume that Celtic will automatically make it into the group stages again having done so before under Brendan Rodgers, but Celtic know that doesn’t happen just by turning up.

The failure to do so in the two previous seasons wasn’t just down to the presence of Ronny Deila, it’s not easy to go and beat the champions of Sweden over two legs when they are in the middle of their season and you are not.

It does have potential difficulties, so I would imagine that Celtic are now thinking about rearming for next summer. One of the problems has been that not only have the squad come in cold after just a week or two of training, but that they have had an incomplete squad.

I think that was part of the reason why what happened against Lincoln Red Imps happened, ancient history though it is now, but Celtic won’t want a repeat of that experience.

That's why they will be looking to strengthen now for next season, and even if it is pre-contracts, they will be making sure that their squad is exactly where Brendan Rodgers wants it to be in the summer.

The treble is symbolic, and it is important, but I would imagine that Peter Lawwell will be thinking that it is far more important that Champions League group stage football is secured for next season.

Bringing players in during the January transfer window with a view to the summer can be beneficial. It worked with Erik Sviatchenko last winter, who was a fairly unheralded signing at the time, but he got bedded in and was allowed to learn about playing for Celtic and the pressures associated with it, and I think he was the better for it.

It’s not a window that clubs like to go overboard in, but if there is somebody that they can get in now who they feel can be a solution in the long term, then I would imagine that Celtic have the money there to spend.

They won’t do it frivolously, but I’m sure that if Brendan Rodgers wanted to cash in his chips, and he has many of them now with Peter Lawwell and Dermot Desmond, that he could get someone if he really wanted them.
