Former Partick Thistle defender Gary Miller has hit back at Liverpool legend Steve McManaman after he was part of the impressive rear-guard action that earned Plymouth Argyle an unlikely draw at Anfield.

The Scot played his part in a stuffy Argyle performance orchestrated by manager Derek Adams that left Liverpool - as well as McManaman, who was summarising for BT Sport - frustrated.

That led the former Reds winger to criticise the lack of attacking ambition shown by Argyle, but Miller said: “Did he expect us to go there and pass Liverpool off the park and win the game?

“I don’t think you could have asked for any better from the manager really. It’s a League Two side going to second in the Premier League. You’ll find Premier League teams going to Anfield and doing the same as we did, so I don’t really know why Steve McManaman is picking that out.

“We always knew it was going to be quite difficult to go there and pass them off the park, which is their game. We had to play to our strengths which was keeping it tight and keeping ourselves in the game as long as we could.

“We managed to see it out and earn the replay, and the end result proved that we had the right approach. Obviously we would have wanted to have attacked a bit more, and I think if I hadn’t got injured then we might have.

“The game plan was always to be in the game at half-time, and continue to keep it tight in the second half because we expected them to really come at us.

“Probably around about the time when I got injured the manager would have been ready to push forward, but with me getting injured he had to keep his tactics in check losing a defender.”

The injury that forced Miller from the field around 15 minutes from time was initially feared to be a broken ankle as he landed awkwardly after contesting a header.

Thankfully, he revealed that the extent of the injury may not be as bad as was first thought, although he hopes to have some clarity on the situation after a scan today.

“It’s been a bit of a crazy couple of days, but I feel not too bad,” he said. “I’m a bit sore and tender but it’s a good result for us so I’ll take that.

“It was a brilliant experience as much as I played. The fans were in good voice although the injury kind of put a dampener on it.

“I’ll be getting a scan in the morning. I had an x-ray and that revealed that there was some bone chipped or loose but that could be from general wear and tear, I don’t think it was specifically from that injury.

“It’s not a break anyway, so the scan should show what the damage to the ligaments is. My leg was swollen above the ankle and that’s why they thought it might be broken, but they think now that maybe the ligaments have ripped some bone off, so we’ll see.

“I think I’ll probably be out for the replay because it’s still pretty fat and swollen, so unless there’s a pretty miraculous change then I doubt I will make it.”

His injury apart, Miller is loving life in Devon after making the move south last summer.

“It’s been good and I’ve been enjoying it like I was expecting to,” he said. “I think I’ve made the right choice.

“I’ve played about 30 games already which is nearly a full season back up the road, so it’s been hard to adjust to that but we’ve been playing well and winning games.

“We’re up in the top three so it’s enjoyable that way, and to go to Anfield and give a good account of ourselves was great.”
