On-fire midfielder and his Morton teammates would be well within their rights to bask in the glory of their lofty position in the Championship table.

But Forbes, who scored his 12th goal of the season last week as Morton moved back to third place with a win over Queen of the South, has revealed that everyone at Cappielow are trying to ignore the standings.

While obviously pleased with his own and his team’s form, Forbes says that they haven’t achieved anything yet.

“You can’t be complacent, we still have 10 games to play which is a quarter of a season,” Forbes said. “There’s still a long way to go.

“We are trying to ignore the table really, because if we don’t do well in this last quarter then everything we’ve done up to now is irrelevant.

“It’s all about keeping the foot on the gas and trying to get as many results as possible.

“It’s not as if we have been lucky, we have been playing well every week and performing at a consistently high standard. But we have to keep that going. I think that the results we have been getting have absolutely been deserved.

“It’s up to other people to judge whether we are contenders for promotion, but we’ll keep plugging away and try to get as many points as we can between now and the end of the season and see where that takes us.

“Hopefully that will mean that we are in one of those top four places.”

Forbes is arguably in the best form of his career, and he admits that he has rarely been higher in confidence stepping onto a football field as he is at this moment.

“It would be nice to think that I can score or set up a goal every time I play,” he said. “With the position I’m in a bit higher up the park a few more chances are coming my way.

“It’s up to me to take them and it’s obviously nice when they do go in.

“My confidence is getting better and better every week. It’s nice to be doing well.

“I’ve been on the other side of it when my confidence has been low and I’ve not been playing well, so I’d like to keep my morale high and keep that run going.

“Those bad times help to motivate me. It’s never nice when confidence is low and you’re not playing well, so I definitely don’t want to be going back to those days.”

Morton face a stern test this afternoon as they travel to take on one of only two teams that are above them in the table in Falkirk.

Forbes says that Peter Houston’s side are a great example for teams like his own as they look to emulate the consistency that the Bairns have achieved over recent years.

“We’re expecting a very tough match,” he said. “Falkirk are obviously flying high themselves, they’ve been on a really good run and they don’t lose many games at home.

“We’re under no illusions about how tough it will be, but we will be going there to give a good account of ourselves, and hopefully it will be enough for three points at the end of the game.

“They’ve been really consistent over a number of years and have just missed out on promotion a few times, so Peter Houston has done a fantastic job there.

“It’s never easy to keep a team at the top end of the table, so they are a team we can look at and take a few tips from.

“Hopefully they have an off-day though. A win would put us in a strong position, but we aren’t looking at it as if that would be our play-off place settled.”
