MOTHERWELL will turn into the Avengers as a super slice of fortune rescued a precious three points for them at the weekend.

The Steelmen surrendered a two-goal lead at home to bottom-placed Inverness before the game turned on its head on 65 minutes.

A Scott McDonald shot appeared to be saved on the line by Owain Fon Williams only for assistant referee David McGeachie to rule it had crossed the line before Well then went on to add a fourth five minutes later.

It tees up a tasty tie at Fir Park in just under two weeks when 11th-placed Dundee return to the scene of the crime when they battered Motherwell 5-1 back in February. It was a result that ultimately cost Mark McGhee his job.

Now flying again under new manager Stephen Robinson, striker McDonald says the buoyant Lanarkshire side are out to be heroes to right that wrong and propel themselves away from relegation trouble.

The Australian said: “We have a big game next against Dundee and I think they are all six-pointers now until it’s mathematically clear or not whether you’ll be safe.

“One result can change things and we were the last team that Dundee beat, so we’re fully aware of that.

“We enjoy this win and we’d like to put the Dundee result right from the last time because that was the detrimental performance that in the end cost our last manager his job. We’ll be looking to rectify that.

“It was a great win for us at home as well and I hope that brings confidence to us because we hadn’t won at home beforehand since November.

“That’s a helluva long time and we have another three home games to go before the end of the season, so it’s going to be good for us.”

It was a win that over the balance of play Motherwell just about deserved. Goals from Chris Cadden and Louis Moult set them on their way in the first nine minutes, but bad luck and even worse defending either side of the half-time whistle helped Alex Fisher to a game-squaring brace.

With Inverness on top as the game ticked beyond the hour, the pivotal moment would soon come to give Motherwell the helping hand towards a first home win in five months.

“Who said it wasn’t a goal, anyway!” joked McDonald. “I had a word with a goalie afterwards and I said I wasn’t completely sure.

“Not that it will be any consolation to Inverness, but we’ve had two clear ones from our point of view against Dundee and Hamilton.

“Obviously, we take it, especially as it was at a pivotal time in the game. Whenever you get a goal, there is always going to be a sense of relief.

“Whether it is in the situation we are in or it’s at the start of a season, it doesn’t matter to me.”

McDonald was also glad to be reunited with strike partner Moult after the former Stoke City man had been missing through injury since the 1-1 draw over Rangers, and he added: “You know what you get from Moulty. He doesn’t give centre-halves a minute.

“He wasn’t 100 per cent fit in this game and it shows his determination and the character of him that he wants to do his bit for the team.

“It was a great performance from him.”
