Darren Young will not be the Albion Rovers manager next season, after he was told in a letter from the club that his services were no longer required.

The 38-year-old’s stock has been on the rise after winning promotion to League One with the Cliftonhill side two season ago, and he looks set to keep them there for the second season in a row with two games remaining.

Rovers travel to take on Brechin City today needing just one more point to guarantee their safety.

Despite being the most successful manager in the club’s 135-year history though, his three-year reign as boss will come to an end after the final game of the season at home against Livingston.

Assistant manager Billy Stark and goalkeeping coach Lindsay Hamilton received a similar letter from chairman Ronnie Boyd during the week, and they too will follow Young out of the club.

Young, who broke the news to his players on Thursday night, had expressed concerns in an interview with SportTimes two weeks ago about planned budget cuts at the club over the summer.

A statement on the club’s website read: "Albion Rovers wishes to announce that manager Darren Young will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

"Following discussions, it has not been possible to agree terms for a contract for 2017/18.

"Darren will remain in charge for the remaining two games to ensure the club's League One status.

"He leaves with the club's best wishes and thanks for what he achieved at Albion Rovers over the past three years. The club will now begin the process to find Darren's successor."
