Motherwell have completed the signing of goalkeeper Russell
Griffiths on a one-year deal following his release from English Premier League side Everton.

The 21-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Fir Park, acting as back-up to Craig Samson for the majority of his stay before displacing him as No 1 towards the end of the season.

He will now compete with fellow new arrival Trevor Carson, who has joined the club from Hartlepool, for a place in Stephen Robinson’s side.

Griffiths told MFC TV: “I’m really excited. I was getting a bit impatient when I was away on holiday, so I’m raring to go and I’m looking
forward to a good pre-season.

“I’m glad I’ve finalised everything so I’m really looking forward to kicking on and trying to seal the No 1 spot this season.

“Everywhere you go there is always going to be competition, but I think it’s vital for me this season to make sure I’m playing.

“Me and Trevor will be professional of course and have the GK union going with Marlon [Beresford, goalkeeping coach], but obviously I want to play, so I’ll be trying my hardest and pushing as much as I can.

“This is my first permanent club away from Everton in the past eight years, so it’s a new start for me and a new chapter.

“When I was offered the contract, I couldn’t turn it down.”

Robinson was pleased to get his man. He said: “Russell showed a tremendous attitude towards the tail end of last season and put in some terrific performances for us in an important run of games.

“We’re delighted to have secured Russell’s signature.”
