St Mirren full-back Stelios Demetriou wants to turn the Paisley 2021 Stadium into a fortress this season, after grabbing a goal in the comeback win over Falkirk on Saturday.

With a bumper crowd of 4639 inside the ground for the opening day fixture, the Saints were roared on to a massive victory as they look to keep the momentum from last season’s great escape flowing.

And the Greek defender believes that with the Buddies support behind them, nobody will relish taking them on at their home patch.

"We all know our target this season is to be up at the top of the league and that all starts with the home games,” he told the club website. “It was a good beginning.

"I think since I joined in January that we don't care who the opponent is, especially at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.

"We'll play any opponent with the same passion and the same desire for three points and nothing less.

"I thought something was going wrong in the first minutes. Maybe it was just the stress of the first game but that is not an excuse. We have to find the solution to stop conceding early goals.

"But my goal, the best thing a player can do is to score a goal for his team and especially in front of this crowd it's the best feeling.

"The manager told us he was happy that after the first 15 minutes we showed we were the better team. We had the second half in front of us to go and win the game.

"Every game we are going to go for the win. Sometimes we are going to be behind, sometimes we are going to be in front. We are going to have to find the strength and the power to turn around games like we did [on Saturday]."

Stelios is grateful to the supporters for their backing, and he wants to reward the travelling Saints fans this weekend as they take on Morton in the Renfrewshire derby at Cappielow.

“They are our 12th player," he said. “They showed from last season that they are by our side. Hopefully we can give them more happiness this season.

"I want them to stay by our side and we'll give them our best on the park.

“We are going to work on the opponents type of play. I know it's a derby but we approach it as another game and look to get the win."
