Morton manager Jim Duffy is expecting Ross Doohan to compete with Derek Gaston for a starting place after securing the young goalkeeper on a loan deal from Celtic.
The 19-year-old has made the move to Cappielow until January, with Morton’s own young keeper Jamie McGowan now likely to leave the club on a loan deal to gain first-team experience.
Duffy told gmfc.net: “Ross is a very talented young goalkeeper. Like a lot of the bigger clubs, Celtic have a huge number of players and I spoke to Brendan Rodgers regarding Ross several weeks ago.
“He just wanted to let things settle down a little bit in terms of his squad before he decided whether he was going to let some players out on loan.
“They’ve started to do that now; a couple of players have gone out on loan, and Ross has come to us and I’m delighted to have him on board.
“Ross’s arrival is no reflection on young Jamie. What we want from Jamie is for him to go and play regular first-team football. That’s really my aim for him now, to try and get him out on loan.
“He has improved significantly Jamie, but I just felt it would be a good for someone like Ross, who’s been at Celtic and has a terrific reputation, to come and compete with Derek Gaston. He’s not coming as back-up – he’s coming to compete.”
