THE start of a long and winding road to the Europa League group stages is not too far away for Rangers and Hibernian, despite the curtain having only just fallen on the 2017/18 campaign.

Steven Gerrard and Neil Lennon’s sides will need to battle through four rounds of two-legged ties if they are to book a spot in the main draw, while Aberdeen must get past three once they join in the second qualifying round.

Last year’s attempt by Scottish clubs was not one to remember, as Rangers crashed out to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn at the first hurdle and St Johnstone did likewise against Trakai of Lithuania.

The Dons fared a little better, seeing off Siroki Brijeg to reach the third round, but they were then stopped by Apollon Limassol to end their hopes of reaching the group stage for the first time in 10 years.

So who could the three Ladbrokes Premiership be up against when the draw for the first two rounds is made on 19 June?

Match dates: First leg 12 July, second leg 19 July

Rangers and Hibernian are seeded

The list of potential opponents is a lengthy one for the two Scottish representatives, but they avoid a number of tricky ties like FFC Copenhagen and Maribor by being seeded.

Even so, there are some possible banana skins in the draw, with the Gers’ conquerors of last season Progres Niederkorn among them along with the side that knocked out St Johnstone, Trakai.

There is a distinct possibility of keeping the fixture close to home, as Welsh outfit Connah’s Quay and Northern Irish trio Cliftonville, Glenavon and Coleraine are in the draw, in addition to Irish teams Shamrock Rovers and Derry City.

Aberdeen enter competition at this stage

All Scottish teams are unseeded

The qualifying process splits into a Champions Path and Main Path at this stage, with Aberdeen, Rangers and Hibernian all heading into the latter if the Gers and Hibees make it through.

This is where things get very tricky, as all three Scottish teams will be unseeded from here on in and some huge names in European football get involved at this early stage.

Serial winners of this competition Sevilla are the big team to avoid, but the likes of Besiktas, Sparta Prague, RB Leipzig, Atalanta, Bordeaux and Premier League outfit Burnley would also provide very tough challenges.

However, there will be several teams from the first qualifying round also in the draw and some teams with less intimidating European pedigree could be there for the taking should the Scottish sides get lucky.
