HAMILTON chairman Les Gray has called for a shake-up of the Premiership play-off system - to make it fairer for clubs outside the top flight.

Last season Accies became the first team to be promoted from the Championship via the play-offs following the merger of the SPL and SFL.

After finishing runners-up in the second tier, Alex Neil's side had to beat Falkirk - who had earlier edged out Queen of the South over two legs - before facing Hibernian over two legs in the final.

Victory at Easter Road came after Hamilton lost the first tie at home and was a thrilling climax to the campaign.

New Douglas Park chief Gray said: "The play-offs were first class and I went to a lot of the games and watched the ones I wasn't at. It was fantastic entertainment and was a huge step forward.

"The fact we got a Hamilton v Hibs final, and the fact it was so dramatic, made it even better for me. The 34th to 38th rounds of games after the split were a lot more interesting, too and the media picked up on that. I think we will hear about it a lot earlier this season.

"By game 25, there will be talk about it and that will add impetus to the whole league.

"The league reconstruction created that excitement.

"But I think there could be a more equitable draw, similar to what happens in England. So 11th in the Premiership plays fourth in the Championship while the teams second and third in that league play before the winners contest the final.

"It is slanted towards the Premiership team at present. And I say that as a director of a Premiership team now."

Victory against Hibs was the start of a remarkable run for Hamilton that has taken them top of the league.

They host Aberdeen tonight on the back of a historic win at Parkhead last time out.

And Gray is determined to enjoy their moment in the sun while it lasts as, even at this early stage, Neil's side edge closer to all but retaining their top-flight berth for next term.

He said: "I know it is an old cliché but nothing's changed.

"We are enjoying it. In all the years we have been in football - at Knightswood Amateurs, Maryhill Juniors, then Clyde -we've all come on a journey to the top of the Premiership and we've enjoyed it. You have to.

"We are not stupid enough to think it will be the same at the end of the season."
