BARRY FERGUSON is confident there is plenty more to come from his Clyde side after he got his reign as Bully Wee boss off to a winning start on Saturday.

A debut goal from Scott McManus and a John Sweeney penalty was enough to see off Ayr United and book a place in the Petrofac Training Cup second round.

Ferguson has only been in charge at Broadwood for a month after replacing Jim Duffy as gaffer, but has hailed his stars for quickly adapting to his style of play as attentions turn to Saturday's League Cup clash with Cowdenbeath.

He said: "We are only four weeks into pre-season so there were a lot of tired legs towards the end of the game but you wouldn't know who was the League One team in the first half, that is my opinion.

"I thought the boys were excellent. I have only had them for four weeks and they have bought into the way I want to play.

"Obviously, there is still room for improvement but I am delighted and it is going all right.

I was a bit disappointed at the end of the game hand and a wee shout at them, a wee blast at them.

"But it shows you what they are capable of doing.

"I believe there are a lot of boys in that dressing room that can play at a higher level and it is up to them to get to a higher level because they have certainly got the ability.

"We have still got a lot that we can work on and we will be doing that this week.

"But they have grasped pretty quickly the way I want to play.

"Their attitude is unbelievable and they are willing to run through brick walls for me and try and do what I am wanting to do. It is a joy to work with them."

Ferguson has been joined in the Broadwood dugout by former Rangers team-mate Bob Malcolm and Malky Thomson, who was his right- hand man during his spell as Blackpool boss last season.

The 36-year-old is registered as a player, but admits he is likely to spend most of his time on the sidelines this season after guiding his side to victory over the Honest Men.

Ferguson said: "I don't think I need to play. I have got a strong midfield.

"I have got a young boy on the bench who is good enough to play, I have got one out suspended, I have got five really good midfielders. I might struggle to get a game.

"I don't know if you can do the two of them. I am enjoying the management side, that is what I want to do.

"I want to coach and work with players and I am happy to do that.

"I will be there in case we have got injuries. I will go into the under-20s. I have taken an interest in the youth side at Clyde as well and I will see what we have got available for that side."
