IAIN VIGURS believes Motherwell can use their fine 3-0 victory over St Mirren to finally get the better of bogey team Aberdeen.

After claiming their second SPFL Premiership win on the bounce with a comprehensive defeat of Danny Lennon's side the Steelmen have firmly rediscovered their mojo to open the five-game festive card with a morale-boosting victory.

This success made even sweeter by the fact that it came against a Buddies outfit they failed to beat once last term but have now taken six points from in two meetings this time around.

Well's Boxing Day battle is with a Dons side who have already knocked them out of the League Cup and handed them their first home league defeat of the season.

The Well midfield ace has no doubt about the importance of that home win - and clean sheet - against Saints.

Vigurs said: "I think it was really important that we backed up our victory at Ross County and we have done that strongly.

"Obviously Aberdeen have beaten us twice now in the League Cup and the Premiership and we wanted a positive platform on which to go up to Pittodrie and we've got it.

"Three goals, a clean sheet and three points against St Mirren is a great springboard into the festive schedule."

Vigurs is also hoping that a two-goal contribution from Henri Anier will help persuade Well to nail down an extension to the Viking Stavanger Estonian's loan which is up in the middle of January.

He said: "Henri has scored two great goals and was unlucky not to get his hat-trick, and he has had a great game.

"I think he is developing a good understanding with big John Sutton and I think he would like to stay on at Motherwell and the club want to keep him.

"So fingers crossed we can get that all sorted."

Vigurs has no doubt how hard it will be to make it third time lucky against the Dons.

He said: "We are going to have to lift things again from our performance against St Mirren if we want to take anything on Boxing Day at Aberdeen.

"But if we want European football then these are the types of games we need to be taking points from."

As for the action, after a cagey opening spell of cat-and-mouse, it was Well who took the lead just after the half hour.

St Mirren keeper Marian Kello had already denied Shaun Hutchinson and Lionel Ainsworth when Anier turned Saints' skipper Jim Goodwin inside out on the six-yard box and buried a rising right foot strike past the helpless Kello.

Three minutes before the break it was Ainsworth who doubled Well's lead after latching onto a John Sutton lay-off and lashing past the advancing Kello.

Early in the second half Kello kept St Mirren's flickering hopes alive with two further fine saves from Anier and Ainsworth.

Then Saints' substitute John McGinn forced Dan Twardzik into his first piece of meaningful action on 60 minutes with a stinging 20-yard drive.

But two minutes later Anier claimed his seventh goal in 20 games for the Fir Park side and the on-loan hitman boosted his chances of a new deal with a clinical finish from a Vigurs delivery as Well wrapped up three vital Christmas points.
