ADAM CAMPBELL insists St Mirren will not hold striker Steven Thompson to account for his sitter against Partick Thistle.

In a goalless encounter in Paisley, the Buddies forward spurned the best opportunity of the match when he miscued with only keeper Paul Gallacher to beat late in the second half.

A sodden surface and howling wind made it difficult for both teams and loan star Campbell reckons a point apiece was a fair reflection.

He said: "The weather wasn't the best and the condition of the pitch wasn't great either, so there were a lot of factors that stopped us playing the football we would rather play.

"At the end of the day, I think it could be a valuable point come the end of the season. We are disappointed, but at the same time we are happy to get a point out of it.

"I think a draw was fair. Both sides had opportunities and we probably had the better chances to score, but they had more in total. It did even itself out, but we are disappointed we didn't get the three points.

"Thommo scores many of them in a season so you can forgive him for making one mistake.

"It happens to the best of them and it happened to him. It is just the way it goes."

The major flashpoint in the clash came when Thistle's Jordan McMillan and Saints skipper Jim Goodwin flew into a 50-50 challenge in the middle of the park. McMillan was booked for his part in the incident and Campbell reckons his captain would have seen red if he had been the culprit.

He said: "I can guarantee if it had been the other way around and Jim had gone in like that he would have been sent off.

"It was 50/50 and they both went in for it and they went in hard, but the boy seemed out of control to me, especially in the conditions.

"On another day, or another referee, it could easily have been a red. Jim got up straight away and that shows what he's all about.

"When he tackles someone he expects them to get straight back up, but he does the same.

"But some players are playing on it, as well as referees and fans. He's probably done the boy a favour by getting straight back up.

"If he had made more of a meal of it then it could have been another story - but that's Jim."
