ST MIRREN have taken Blackpool right-back Jake Caprice on trial as they look to bolster their squad.

The 20-year-old, who can also play in right midfield, will spend the week training with Danny Lennon's side with a view to making a permanent move.

The Londoner started his career with Crystal Palace before moving to the Seasiders last summer.

He spent part of last season on loan at Dagenham & Redbridge before signing a contract extension with Blackpool at the end of the campaign.

Lennon's main priority is to sign a striker to offer back-up to Steven Thompson but he also believes Caprice has qualities that could enhance his side.

He said: "Jake's going to train with us this week and we'll take a look at him and take it from there. I've only seen him for one training session so far but he seems quick and handles the ball reasonably well.

"We're still looking for another striker but we've yet to identify the right one. This player came on the radar and Blackpool have kindly allowed him to come up for a week to let us run an eye over him."

Lennon admitted he had made an enquiry about taking Celtic's Tony Watt on loan but was no further forward in his attempts to land the player.

"Is that an option? Not from the first time that I made an enquiry about it," he said. "But maybe the goalposts will move a bit when the end of the window draws ever closer."

The Saints boss revealed he was disappointed with some of the crossing and shooting from his players in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock, and vowed to spend time making improvements in training.

He added: "I think we had 15 attempts on goal but only five were on target. That's disappointing given the standards we set. Had our quality been better in the final third we would have won that game without a doubt.

"Some of the crosses from Danny Grainger and Gary Teale were indifferent and below the standard that we expect from quality players like those two. And then when the crosses were good, the finishing was poor.

"That's something we will be working on hard this week, to improve on both our finishing and our crossing."

Lennon, though, was delighted to see the return of Darren McGregor to the St Mirren side.

The defender made his first start almost a year to the day since sustaining cruciate ligament damage for a second time and put in an accomplished performance in an unfamiliar right-back role, only getting the nod shortly before kick-off after Jon Robertson picked up a knock in the warm-up.

Lennon said: "Darren came though the game fantastically well. It was a big moment for him after missing out on the last couple of seasons but he played like he hadn't been away.

"This was the same week in which his two previous injuries happened so psychologically that could have been a factor but he never had that time to think about anything.

"He went in there and I thought he was absolutely rock solid for us. He's certainly given me food for thought. And sometimes rather than planning these things as managers you just get a wee bit of luck and stumble across them."
