MOTHERWELL midfielder Stuart Carswell is desperate to break his long goal-scoring duck tonight in Iceland and make sure his first-leg miss doesn't come back to haunt the Fir Park side.

The 20-year-old has developed into a key player for Stuart McCall's side alongside skipper Keith Lasley in the Well engine room.

However, tonight's Europa League tie against Stjarnan will be his 80th appearance for the Lanarkshire side ... and he's yet to score!

Carswell thought he was ready to break his duck in last week's 2-2 first leg draw at Fir Park when John Sutton cut the ball back to him, but he blazed over from 10 yards when Well were 2-0 up and cruising.

That sparked a comeback from the Icelandic outfit and they stunned Motherwell by netting two penalties to put themselves in the driving seat for tonight.

Carswell would love to net his first ever senior strike this evening, but is more concerned about ensuring Well are in the hat for the right to face Legia Warsaw or Nomme Kalju to make everyone forget about that miss.

He admitted: "I'm trying to forget that! It was a great chance. The ball was cut back to me and I was about 12 yards out and I've leaned back. I should have maybe side-footed it, but I went for power. It's a chance we might regret, but hopefully not.

"At 2-0 up we felt comfortable and if we had made it 3-0 it would have put a major dent in their confidence as well. But when they got the penalty and goal through a ricochet, it gave them a wee lift. Then they started to press.

"Their other penalty in the 90th minute was a bit of a sickener, but you saw the way they celebrated when they scored it, they maybe think they have got the job done. So we need to get over to Iceland and show them.

"Any goal is a good goal and it doesn't matter how it comes. If you look at Josh's Law's first goal last week, that shows what can happen if you are in the right place at the right time and hopefully I can get a bobble like that just on the line where you can't really miss!

"I scored a few last year for the Under-20s, I've just not scored for the first team yet, but I'm hoping to break my duck soon. You don't look to go out and score goals, you go out to win as a team. If we go out and win every game and I never score, that doesn't bother me. As long as we keep playing well as a team, then it'll come."

Carswell is so confident he will get on the scoresheet soon and frequently, he has even placed a wager with team-mate Shaun Hutchinson.

He said: "I'm big pals with him and he's said he would score more goals than me this year, so I've put a wee bet on. It's £50 - he wanted £500, but I said £50! We'll see how that goes. He's a presence in the box so I'll need to get my shooting boots on."

Carswell - who made his debut for the club in 2011 - is convinced Well will progress and believes he and his team- mates will have learned from last week's disappointment.

He stressed: "I'm confident we can do well there. I think we can get a few goals so we just need to shore it up at the back and be more stable and not give them as many chances, which I think we won't because we are a lot fitter now.

"In the first 20 minutes, we had so much of the ball and felt in total control and until they got the penalty and started pressing us I thought they didn't really look like a danger.

"They had a good few chances too. They could have scored more and so could we. It was an open game. I think we'll maybe shut up a bit this week and see what we can do."
