DANNY LENNON remains hopeful of bringing Newcastle's Adam Campbell to St Mirren next month.

The 18-year-old striker was linked with a loan move to the Paisley club in August but a deal couldn't be completed and Campbell went to Carlisle United instead.

That hasn't put St Mirren off, however, and talks are underway with Newcastle about taking the England under-19 star for the remainder of the season.

Saints have been reliant on veteran striker Steven Thompson for goals this term and, with Stephane Bahoken set to return to France after an unsuccessful loan stint from Lyon, Lennon is keen to add extra firepower to his squad.

Campbell, who played for Newcastle against St Mirren in pre-season, could be the man to fit the bill.

Lennon said: "We know a great deal about Adam Campbell and know he's a good quality player.

"We can see an opportunity here for all parties where he can come and help us, we can help him and Newcastle should benefit too.

"He had a bit of a bad experience at Carlisle where he never got much game time but we hope that won't put him off coming to us.

"With the January window opening up soon we hope it's something we can get over the line. There's a real possibility we can get this one done although it's not set in stone just yet."

One player heading the other way is Kealan Dillon. The young Irishman was snapped up by Saints in the summer after being released by Hull City.

But, after failing to make a first-team appearance, he has decided to move on.

Lennon added: "Kealan has parted company with the club and we thank him for his efforts and wish him all the best.

"He was a lad who was getting a bit frustrated at not getting his opportunity at first-team level.

"We've got other kids ahead of him just now so we gave him the choice of either going or staying and fighting for a place by proving us wrong.

"But he's made his decision and I believe he'll go on now to play at a decent level."

St Mirren will look to get back to winning ways at Motherwell this weekend following a 2-0 defeat to Aberdeen last Saturday.

Lennon admitted the conditions didn't help his side but felt that the inclement weather was just something Scottish clubs had to put up with at this time of year.

Unlike Celtic, Saints have no plans to push for a short winter break next month.

The manager added: "The weather conditions were a massive factor in the Aberdeen game last weekend and that's how it's going to be over the rest of the winter.

"We just have to learn to deal with it better as it's always the same for both teams. People talk about switching to summer football but you can never say for sure the weather's going to be better.

"It could be awful in July but mild in December. That's life in Scotland for you.

"I know Celtic have arranged a short winter break but they're in a different boat from the rest of us with a lot more games most seasons."
