ALBION ROVERS player-manager Darren Young believes he owes Sandy Clark big time after helping him throughout his inaugural season in the dug-out.

Clark has been assistant to Young this season at Albion Rovers and, with the Coatbridge club putting one hand on the League Two trophy, Young has acknowledged the role Clark has played.

Rovers are currently seven points clear at the top and, while Young has warned his squad they need to keep the results coming, he can see the end in sight.

"We are in a great position, but there are still 18 points to play for - and we'd like to take them all," he said. "We couldn't be happier with where we are at this stage. We are in a great position, but we are trying to keep our thoughts on what we still have to do.

"I need to be honest, though, and say that I owe so much to where we are to Sandy.

"I found it really hard going in the first few months, just trying to juggle everything. It is a big adjustment, especially because I was trying to play and manage and coach and do the lot.

"Sandy has been there and done it all. I know Sandy well and his help and experience has been invaluable to me."

Albion take on Elgin tomorrow and the danger, according to Young, is that his side are playing a team who are still fighting for their survival.

Despite holding what would appear to be a commanding lead, the Albion boss wants his players to keep fighting for every point.

"The danger in this league is that everyone still has something to play for," he said. "There are teams fighting for their lives and others fighting for a play-off spot and, although Elgin have moved out of the relegation zone, they will want to keep pushing on.

"They have come on a bit in recent weeks, so the aim from us is to be as professional as possible and go out and just keep the same level of performances.

"We know we are nearly there, but until we are over the line, I don't want anyone to take their foot off the pedal."

Alan Reid will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining knee ligament damage, but other than that, Young has a full squad to pick from.

He added: "The good thing about where we are in the league is that we can say to the players to go out and relax and enjoy it," he said. "There is a wee bit of pressure, but it is the kind of pressure we want.

"At the start of the season I don't think anyone would have had us down as favourites for the title by any stretch of the imagination, so there is a lot of satisfaction in where we are.

"I knew we had a good squad of players, but it is the manner in which they have worked together that has brought us so far along the road. The key now is that we keep it going."
