Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston has told Reuben Gabriel he cannot expect to walk into the first team simply because he is a Nigeria international after a row broke out over the player's treatment by the club.

The midfielder was handed a three-year deal by previous boss Kenny Shiels in April.

Killie's Johnston said: "At the end of the day, you are playing on merit and he has to do more himself to get in the team."

The 23-year-old had injury problems early in the campaign but has not played for Killie this season despite being named in the Nigeria squad for Monday's friendly meeting with Italy.

The intrigue around the contrasting fortunes at club and international level was fuelled by comments on a Twitter account which purports to be run by the player.

The comments alleged that Kilmarnock had not paid the player and hit out at Johnston for not picking him.

Killie chairman Michael Johnston said: "I can state categorically the club has paid Gabriel the appropriate salary."
