CRAIG REID missed out on one of the most stunning Parkhead shocks in recent years last season.

Now he hopes Motherwell can upset the odds to continue their progress up the Premiership standings.

Reid was training with Allan Moore's Morton ahead of the League Cup clash with Celtic 12 months ago but didn't put pen to paper on a short-term Cappielow contract until after the Ton's surprise triumph.

The Hoops have seen off Dundee United and Aberdeen on home soil so far this term but Reid knows anything is possible as Stuart McCall's side gear up for their trip to Glasgow.

He said: "It is going to be hard at Celtic Park but hopefully we can take something from the match.

"They are coming off the back of the Europa League game so hopefully that affects them. We are going there with a bit more confidence now.

"I hadn't signed for Morton at the time of the League Cup win. I didn't join them until October so I missed out.

"I only missed it by a couple of weeks because I played against St Johnstone in the next round.

"I was training with them at the time but I hadn't signed so I couldn't play.

"When Morton beat Celtic last season it was one of the biggest nights in the club's history and everybody was buzzing.

"The season didn't turn out too well for the boys unfortunately, that was the main highlight from it.

"But, at the time, everyone was delighted because it was obviously a massive result and showed that anything is possible in football."

Just four points separate the champions and the Steelmen going into the Premiership fixture on Sunday but neither side are where they want to be in the standings after low-key starts to the season.

Ronny Deila's side are fourth after dropping points to Inverness Caley Thistle and Dundee so far but Reid knows they are still the team to beat as the top two from last term get set to go head to head.

He said: "Celtic are the benchmark in the league with the squad they have and the quality of their players.

"It is always a hard game when you go there, no matter what kind of run they are on. They are the top team in Scotland and set the standards in the Premiership.

"I haven't seen too much of their new signings but I have heard a lot about John Guidetti at Manchester City and he obviously did well at Feyenoord.

"That just shows you what they can do in the transfer market when they can go out and get signings like that."

Motherwell may head to Parkhead as huge outsiders to get a result but they do so on the back of a much-needed victory over Ross County last weekend.

Goals from Iain Vigurs and John Sutton clinched the win in the Highlands and Reid hopes it will be an early turning point in their campaign.

He said: "It was important we got the victory on Saturday after a few fixtures without a win. We need to start building a bit of momentum and confidence in the squad to try to push up the league.

"The international break wasn't ideal for us, we wanted a game as soon as possible after losing to St Johnstone but we had to wait to get going again and rectify things.

"We got the win on Saturday, which was really important, and now hopefully we can start moving up the league."
