JIM GOODWIN has urged his Buddies to grasp the chance to become club legends for the second time in two seasons.

St Mirren picked up their first Premiership points of the season with Friday night's dramatic 2-1 win over Partick and they return to Firhill tonight in the third round of the League Cup.

Goodwin was captain of the Paisley side when manager Danny Lennon led them all the way to the tournament's final at Hampden in 2013.

The Irish midfielder then had the honour of lifting the trophy after Saints' dramatic 3-2 win over Hearts.

Now the player/coach has urged his team-mates to use the lure of another cup run as motivation to see off Thistle again.

Kenny McLean's last-minute spot kick gave Tommy Craig's side their league win over the Jags but Goodwin said: "The League Cup is a great competition for clubs like ourselves.

"For so-called smaller clubs in Scotland it offers a hell of an opportunity to win some silverware.

"That's the message we have been trying to get through to the boys.

"Some of the lads who have been here for a while experienced the great day we had 18 months ago.

"But for the new boys - especially the ones who have come to the club from down in England, we have been trying to drum into them that it is a great chance to ensure they will have a medal to treasure at the end of their careers.

"And that is the biggest incentive we can give to our players.

"Playing Partick will be a really difficult test again, just as it was for us last Friday.

"I don't expect them to change too much for the cup match.

"Thistle have a small squad like ourselves, so both teams will know what to expect.

"Another victory for us would be great."

St Mirren will give Ellis Plummer until the last minute to prove he is fit enough to start.

The on-loan Manchester City defender limped off against the Jags with a groin injury.

Saints skipper Steven Thompson will miss the cup clash as he continues his rehabilitation from surgery to cure his own groin complaint.
