KILMARNOCK defender Ross Barbour believes he has matured on and off the pitch after being given the shock news of impending fatherhood.

Last season the 21-year-old right back did not play a first-team game until late March, after learning that his girlfriend Kayleigh was expecting a baby.

He went on to play the final seven games to help keep Killie in the SPFL Premiership and earned a new two-year contract.

He has played in all seven league games this term and admits the need to provide for his family has given new meaning to his career.

"Our baby daughter is due on November 8 and I'm looking forward to becoming a dad," said Barbour ahead of the League Cup clash with St Johnstone at Rugby Park tonight.

"My life has changed a lot already. I've hardly been out in five months. I have been sitting in with Kayleigh. It's a quiet life but that has probably helped my football.

"Hearing I was to be a dad was a shock. I've had a few pointers from my team-mates who have kids already.

"This is now more of a job than a hobby for me, because I will need to provide for my wee girl."

Barbour knows that keeping his place in the team will not be easy following the signing of former Sheffield United ace Darryl Westlake.

He added: "It's been good playing every game but there is competition there so I know I always have to be on my toes.

"Darryl has come in, Mark O'Hara can play right-back, so can Jamie Hamill. If I don't play I'll be out of the team."

Barbour did his cause no harm on Saturday as Killie held Hamilton to a draw with their third clean sheet of the term.

He said: "We didn't play too well but Accies never really had any chances. I think we are a lot tighter at the back this season."
