MOTHERWELL crashed to a shock defeat in Iceland last night as an extra-time goal from Stjarnan saw the Fir Park men become the only Scottish side to exit Europe.

Stuart McCall's side lost 3-2 on the night - 5-4 on aggregate - and have now gone ten games in a row in Europe without a win and have crashed out at the first time of asking in their last four campaigns.

Yet they only have themselves to blame after blowing a two-goal lead in the first leg last week and twice losing the lead in Reykjavik against the part-timers.

It was a desperate loss against a team Motherwell should be beating comfortably and it was a disastrous tie for skipper Keith Lasley, who gave away three penalties in two games - all of them converted by Olafur Karl Finsen - and missed an extra-time sitter as well as being booked.

Well goals from Steven Hammell and Lionel Ainsworth should have been enough, but they didn't know how to defend a lead.

McCall picked the same team as last week and they certainly started in the same positive manner by forcing a couple of corners within the first five minutes in Stjarnan's tiny, but sold-out Stjornuvollur ground.

But they were also given a quick indication of how dangerous the home side could be when Pablo Punyed's shot drifted wide.

However, the Scots stunned the home fans by taking an 11th-minute lead thanks to another corner. Ainsworth's flag-kick picked out the unmarked Hammell, who bulleted a header into the top corner from 15 yards out.

It was the perfect start for Well and their 250-strong support, who had travelled north and celebrated Hammell's first goal for the club since March, 2012.

But it wasn't a huge surprise when the home side equalised in the 37th minute and once again it was down to a penalty conceded by Lasley.

He took an extra touch when trying to clear his lines and bundled Atli Johansson over. Greek ref Athanasios Giachos took his time before pointing to the spot, with Motherwell's players insisting it was a harsh decision, but Finsen easily converted.

Simon Ramsden and Lasley both went close to regaining the lead for the Scots at the end of the first half as Well realised they had to significantly raise their game.

Motherwell regained the lead in the 66th minute and it was all down to some superb good, old-fashioned wing play by Josh Law.

The summer signing, who grabbed a double in his debut last week in the first leg, bolted down the left and got past his man with a combination of speed and trickery before delivering a peach of a cross to the back post which was turned in by a stretching Ainsworth on the volley.

But they failed to learn their lesson and conceded another soft goal with five minutes left.

Substitute Rolf Toft was allowed far too much time and space in the penalty box and easily fired high into the roof of the net with the Well central defence looking very suspect again.

Motherwell lost Stuart Carswell to injury in extra time as Jack Leitch came on and Ingvar Jonsson made a great double stop from Lasley and John Sutton, but the hosts then missed two good chances.

And Stjarnan, who are unbeaten in the league after 12 matches, won it with seven minutes left when Johansson fired a long-range volley in off the bar to set up a tie with Lech Poznan.
