Aberdeen set up a Europa League clash with Real Sociedad after first-half goals from Adam Rooney and Niall McGinn earned them a memorable 2-1 win over Groningen in Holland.

Aberdeen knew that an away goal would be crucial following a goal-less Pittodrie clash and they got it 26 minutes into the second leg of the second qualifying round when Rooney converted a penalty.

McGinn followed up after Rooney hit the bar seven minutes later and Aberdeen looked like strolling through.

But Maikel Kieftenbeld pulled one back just before the break and the Dons had to ride out some uncomfortable periods in the second half.

Delighted boss Derek McInnes said: "This win was thoroughly deserved. We showed pace, invention, confidence and, when it was required, real resolve.

"There were some strong individual performances and a lot of determined teamwork. That is why we are managing them. I have a huge regard for my team and there is a lot to look forward to this season and beyond. We have good types.

"We were very comfortable for long periods. I expected us to defend well and to attack well. We were quite incisive."

On the prospect of facing the Spaniards in their third qualifying round first-leg tie in San Sebastian next Thursday night, McInnes added: "It is exciting for us. The club will do well again financially, but more imporant is the fans keep enjoying this. Results like last night can give us confidence to go to Spain and get a positive result."

Meanwhile, St Johnstone beat Lucerne of Switzerland 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw for a 2-2 aggregate to set up a clash with Spartak Trnava of Slovakia.

Stevie May put Tommy Wright's men ahead from the penalty spot, but substitute Marco Schneuwly silenced the 8,000 Saints fans just before the hour mark.
