IAN MURRAY hopes his transfer gamble will pay off for Dumbarton after splashing the cash to land star striker Chris Kane.

The St Johnstone kid joined the Sons on loan for a second time last week and made an immediate impact as he netted the only goal of the game in Saturday's win over Livingston.

Kane takes Bryan Prunty's place in the Rock squad following his switch to Airdrie and boss Murray is delighted to land his man.

"I had been speaking to Tommy Wright for a few weeks and it all hinged on whether he could bring in a player," said Murray.

"As soon as we knew Chris was available, the chairman and the board came up trumps to make the deal happen.

"If it had been another player, we probably wouldn't have been able to do it due to finances.

"But because it was Chris, we decided to go for it as we know what we will get from him.

"There is no guarantee he will hit the same form as last season, but he has got off to a great start."

Meanwhile, Jim Duffy admits Morton didn't hit the heights required as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to SPFL League 1 promotion rivals Forfar.

Goals from Declan McManus and Reece Hands proved in vain for the Ton as Dick Campbell's side emerged victorious. "We didn't really perform to the levels that we have been performing at for the last few weeks," said Duffy.

"We gave the players a real warning and we expressed that no-one comes to Forfar and gets an easy game.

"Dick's team play very good football. Forfar are a good side and their front two gave our back line a torrid time."
