GUS MACPHERSON hailed his Hampden heroes after Queen's Park moved top of the table on Saturday.

After seeing title rivals Arbroath and Albion Rovers slip-up earlier in the day, QP made the most of their opportunity to clinch pole position in the promotion race with victory over Berwick.

Goals from Ross MacPherson and Paul Woods, either side of an Andrew Russell leveller, earned the Spiders a crucial fourth tier triumph.

Queen's are now two points clear in League Two and boss MacPherson said: "We definitely played better in the second period.

"We knew going into the game we could go top so maybe nerves came into play early on.

"Credit to the boys for grinding out a win. We just need to hold our own until the end of the season."

While Queen's were the big winners of the weekend, it was to prove another disappointing day at the office for Albion.

A 1-0 defeat to East Stirlingshire was their third on the spin at Cliftonhill and gaffer Darren Young said: "It was a poor goal to concede. We have to pick ourselves up."

Elsewhere, Clyde dropped to eighth in the table on goal difference after being held to a 1-1 draw by East Fife.

Fraser Mullen netted in the last minute to cancel out Brian McQueen's opener.

Bully Wee boss Barry Ferguson said: ""It was the poorest game I've seen in a long time. It was a defensive error that cost us the goal and I've let them know that in the dressing room. I didn't think we were under any great pressure at the back and I thought we would see the game out. We have the players to do that, but a single error cost us."
