DAVID CORNELL dreams of one day playing for Wales - and hopes St Mirren can help him make it happen.

The Swansea City goalkeeper joined the Paisley club in the summer on a season-long loan deal in a bid to get more first-team football.

He was instantly installed as manager Danny Lennon's first- choice stopper following the departure of Craig Samson to Kilmarnock.

After a shaky start, the 22-year-old has grown in confidence in recent matches and was one of the bright spots for Saints in their recent 2-1 defeat to Partick Thistle.

Cornell has represented Wales Under-21s three times and was part of the Senior squad that faced Scotland in November 2009, a match that brought George Burley's time in charge to an end.

With Swansea's goalkeeping coach Adrian Tucker keeping regular tabs on his progress in Scotland, Cornell hopes a string of good performances can push him closer to the first team at his boyhood heroes and also to a first cap for Chris Coleman's national team.

He said: "I was in the Welsh squad four years ago so it would be nice to get back in there and get my first cap.

"Hopefully playing games up here will help push my case.

"I don't know if Chris Coleman will make it up to see me but maybe he'll catch the TV highlights or send someone up to one of our games.

"I'd like to think there could be a spot for me in his squad one day.

"I want to play at the highest level for club and country.

"I'd love to play for Swansea in the Premier League and help Wales to a European Championship or World Cup.

"I'm a Swansea boy and supported them all my life so I'd love to go down there and become the No.1 some day.

" I've spoken to our goalkeeper coach at Swansea a few times and he's had DVDs sent down of our games so he's keeping an eye on me.

"But for now I'll just concentrate on doing my best for St Mirren."
