DUMBARTON are to quit the Bet Butler Stadium and move to a new 4,000- capacity arena.

The club have been considering a switch for several years and, after talks with West Dunbartonshire Council, have unveiled their proposals as they get set to submit planning applications early next year.

Due to land restrictions and the proximity of residential housing that don't allow for expansion at the BBS, the decision has been taken to quit their home at the foot of Dumbarton Rock.

The Sons moved there in 2000 after leaving Boghead Park, with the 2020- seater stadium often used by the Scotland national team as a training base.

The new arena is a big step forward for Dumbarton and will also provide facilities for the local community.

A Sons spokesman said: "The club has been looking for a new site for a stadium for more than five years. We are excited to progress plans for a new sporting facility that can put DFC at the heart of the local community.

"Consultations have taken place with our Supporters Trust. A public exhibition will allow supporters and residents to view and comment on our proposals."

The new stadium, at Young's Farm to the west of Dumbarton, will have 3000 seats and capacity for a further 1000 fans on a terraced area.

The club also plan to build additional pitches for training and community use while the site will have gym and leisure facilities, a hotel and retail and office space.

Dumbarton hope the development will "contribute significantly to improving the availability, accessibility and quality of sporting facilities in West Dunbartonshire and help to improve the health and well-being of local residents".

Under the guidance of Ian Murray, the Sons finished fifth in Scotland's second tier last season, with the boss telling SportTimes earlier this year that a move to full-time football was something the board could consider.

They are currently ninth in the table after Saturday's draw at home to Hearts.
