ST MIRREN skipper Steven Thompson believes a cup win tomorrow night can be the antidote to the club's ailing run in the league.

The Buddies have had an unhealthy start to their SPFL Premiership campaign, with three defeats from three matches - and no goals - pinning them at the foot of the table with Ross County.

Their latest loss was a tight 1-0 reverse in Paisley to Dundee on Saturday as sub Peter MacDonald bagged the winner for the top-flight newcomers with 10 minutes to play.

Saints went eight games into last season before notching their first win, against Hearts. Their League Cup defence was ended by Queen of the South.

Thompson is eager to stop the rot quickly this term, and has targeted a League Cup victory tomorrow night against Dunfermline as the boost his team need.

The striker said: "It can just be one game that can be the catalyst to turn it around for you - maybe tomorrow night in the cup.

"We'll try to get that win that can give you that bit of confidence back, and then a really important game is next Saturday against a very strong Dundee United.

"It will be difficult against an organised, energetic Dunfermline side. By no means it'll be a walkover, but hopefully we can break our duck."

Before Saturday's substitute appearance, the former Scotland ace had not featured for St Mirren for almost four months through injury.

Saints fans will hope their talismanic captain will kickstart the club's season by scoring himself now he has game-time under his belt.
