JOHN SUTTON says Motherwell's must ignite their creative spark if they are to extinguish their losing streak on Saturday.

Four games into the SPFL Premiership season and Well sit 10th in the table with just one win and one goal from four matches.

Against Inverness two weeks ago the Fir Park side mustered just one shot on target and two at the weekend in the 2-0 defeat at Kilmarnock, even though encouraging signs of improvement were visible in Ayrshire.

That's in stark contrast to last term when a free-scoring Motherwell side bagged 64 goals, averaging just over 1.5 a game.

Six of those goals came against St Johnstone, this weekend's opponents at Fir Park, as Well defeated the Perth club twice at home on league duty while going down 3-0 and 2-0 at McDiarmid Park.

Sutton, Motherwell's top scorer last term with 23, knows Stuart McCall's side must hit new heights in attack if they are to go into the international break on a positive note.

He said: "We have good players and I don't think we are a million miles away from getting it together. But obviously we need to pull our finger out at some point and make sure we do that.

"You don't want to go into the international break on a defeat.

"The game against St Johnstone is certainly winnable but it's a very tough league and they are a very good team.

"We're going to have to pick up in certain areas of our play but there were signs of improvement against Kilmarnock.

"We played a little bit better but we are a bit lacking in creating a lot of chances at the moment.

"It's been a problem in the first few games but I thought at times against Killie we played quite well. That's something we need to take heart from."

He added: "They are a very tough team and well organised. You need to be right on your game because they are difficult to break down and that's maybe where we have struggled so far.

"It's going to be a tricky one for us but there is no point feeling sorry for ourselves, we just have to get our heads up and do the best we can."

Sutton has yet to get off the mark this term as Well's solitary goal came on the first day of the season courtesy of youngster Lee Erwin.

Since then McCall has drafted in ex-Well star Henrik Ojamaa on loan from Legia Warsaw to boost his attacking arsenal.

The Estonian enjoyed his first start since returning on Saturday, and could be in line to partner Sutton in attack again on Saturday.

SUTTON believes the quality in the Motherwell team - who face a trip to Hamilton Accies in the third round of the Scottish Communities League Cup - will eventually prevail.

He said "Henrik has come in and looked good. I'm sure he'll be looking to play a couple of games because he hasn't played as much as he would have liked. But you can see he's got a lot of quality, it's the same with Bob McHugh and Lee Erwin.

"The quality is there but we need to get it together sharpish.

"We had a fantastic support at Kilmarnock and it would be nice to give them something to cheer about for the first time in a few weeks."
