KILMARNOCK defender Lee Ashcroft says he has been boosted by the encouragement of his experienced team-mates after making a sustained first-team breakthrough.

The 20-year-old has started 13 consecutive games and formed a promising partnership with Manuel Pascali in central defence.

And he has also been lifted by advice from the likes of striker Kris Boyd. "Paska and Boydy come up and tell you when you've done well," said Ashcroft, whose team face St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.

"They will be the first to say you have done something wrong but they are always the first to give you encouragement.

"It's a boost and it's nice after the game to hear you have done well and can take that confidence into the next game.

"Paska talks and helps you through the game. I feel as if we are strong together and getting to know each other's games a lot more now."

Ashcroft had to wait for a start under Allan Johnston after making his first three first-team appearances under Kenny Shiels last May .

But he seized his opportunity after coming in during December when Pascali was suspended and Darren Barr and Ismael Bouzid were injured.

And he has retained his place despite the loan signing of Brighton defender Vitalijs Maksimenko, who is yet to feature, and Bouzid's return to fitness.

Ashcroft said: "I've played a bunch of games in a row now. It's nice to know the boss has faith in me and has kept me in the team.

"I am absolutely loving it and I just hope I can keep my place for the rest of the season and see how high up we can finish in the table."
