MARK McGUIGAN admits there will be an increased expectation on Albion Rovers this afternoon as they bid for another William Hill Scottish Cup shock.

James Ward's side booked their place in the fifth round with a remarkable 1-0 win over the Premiership's Motherwell last year, arguably the greatest result in the Coatbridge club's history.

Rovers' reward for taking the Steelmen's scalp is a home clash against Stenhousemuir today and McGuigan, who completed a permanent switch to Cliftonhill from Partick Thistle last month, knows all eyes will be on them.

He said: "Nobody thought we were going to beat Motherwell, even ourselves, but we got the result I think our efforts deserved. People might think that if we can beat Motherwell then we should beat Stenhousemuir but that is not the way football works.

"The Motherwell result was one of those things on the day. It might never happen again. We are well aware of what's required and how strong Stenhousemuir are. We are the underdogs.

"But all of that goes out the window when the game starts and if we can perform the way we know we can, we can get another result.

"Against Motherwell, we were hoping for the best but Stenny are a bit closer to us in terms of league positions and there will be more pressure on us to get a result."

Rovers are one of four part-time teams left in the competition and bidding for a rare place in the quarter-finals.

McGuigan is determined to keep their Scottish Cup dream going for as long as possible.

He said: "It doesn't happen very often that part-time teams get to this stage of the Scottish Cup and you never know what will happen in the draw for the next round. It could work for you and you could have a chance of getting into the semi-finals, which would be crazy.

"It has been a long time since Rovers got to this stage and the onus is on the boys to go and get another result today."

Extending their Scottish Cup fairytale is not the only objective on Rovers' to-do list this season as they bid for a place in the League Two play-offs.

Ward's side are well-placed in the standings to get a top-four finish but McGuigan admits catching Peterhead and launching a title challenge is out of reach.

He said: "I knew it wasn't going to happen for me at Thistle and I had one or two other options, but I wanted to come back to Rovers and help them win promotion. It is working out well just now - I am playing regularly and enjoying it.

"We have had a couple of disappointing results recently, but that happens and we have to get back to a level of consistency that will keep us in the play-offs.

"Winning the league is going to be tough now I would say, but we want to get as high up the table as we can."

MEANWHILE, Rovers have issued a rallying call to fans to get behind the team and roar them on in the cup game.

A statement from the club revels in the Motherwell win, saying the day will "live long in the memory."

It adds: "Rovers are indelibly committed to Coatbridge, and we ask that Coatbridge reciprocates the support.

"This is where you come in. Albion Rovers need you to come along on Saturday and cheer on the team in their quest to make history.

"The match promises to be an old-fashioned cup tie, full of action and passion; in short, a cracker.

"Rovers would urge everyone to come along to Cliftonhill and participate in the festivities. Your support could make all the difference."
