It turned out to be alright on the night for Hamilton Accies in Edinburgh.

And goal hero Tony Andreu is delighted to end a rollercoaster campaign in style after their SPFL Premiership place was confirmed on Sunday.

Alex Neil's side ended a remarkable campaign in style at Easter Road as they beat Hibernian on penalties to condemn the capital club to the Championship next season.

Accies went into the second leg trailing 2-0 but after Jason Scotland scored early on, Andreu kept their dreams alive with a last-minute strike.

It took two shoot-out saves from keeper Kevin Cuthbert to get Hamilton over the line and spark wild celebrations.

The promotion party came just days after Accies threw away the Championship title by losing to Dumbarton and saw a last-day demolition of Morton prove futile.

They ended the season in the best possible fashion but Andreu admits they didn't start the campaign with their sights set on promotion.

He said: "Before the season started we didn't expect it.

"But we won our first nine games and thought 'wow, we have a good team.'

"We played good football too which is what the manager wanted. We were passing the ball well and suddenly thought we can do it.

"We then kept believing all throughout the season and it was hard when we didn't win the title.

"When we didn't beat Dumbarton it was tough. We thought then our chance of winning the league had gone.

"But then we went into the final game and gave it everything against Morton, winning 10-2. We did our job that day better than we could have ever imagined.

"We scored one goal then two, three, four and kept going. It was an amazing feeling to get 10. Dundee were still playing when we finished and all we could do was wait.

"But they got the result they needed and our win over Morton didn't help us.

"That was tough to take but it's in the bin now. We are promoted now and it's great.

"I'll be honest, I feel for the Hibs players because they're good guys and good players as well.

"It wasn't a great season for them and it's hard for them to go down. But we showed we can play in the top league."

It may have taken until the ninth spot-kick, as Cuthbert followed up his save from Kevin Thomson with another superb stop from a Jason Cummings effort, for Hamilton's place in the Premiership to be secured, but it was a deserved success for Neil and his players.

The Lanarkshire side were written off ahead of the second leg thanks to Cummings' double at New Douglas Park in midweek which had Hibs well in control of the tie.

Scotland's 12th-minute strike gave Hamilton hope that they could get over the line, with Andreu's last-gasp leveller just rewards for their efforts on the afternoon.

Terry Butcher's side were given a barrage of abuse from the home fans after an abject display that saw them drop out of the top flight.

Andreu said: "I think it is human nature. They win the first leg 2-0 and then playing the second leg at home.

"But we knew at home they sometimes crumble because their fans shout at them whenever they do something wrong.

"I think that's hard for them. But we knew that if we could score the first goal we could do it. So I don't think they thought it was done after the first-leg, not really.

"They had a big advantage and we just kept our confidence and believed we could do it. It was still in our hands.

"Sure, it was always going to be difficult to score two goals away from home but we managed to do it.

"For Hibs it was hard because after our first goal it wasn't easy for them to keep their heads up. They knew one more goal would turn things around."
