IAIN VIGURS today admitted he's happy for Motherwell to be cast in the role of silent assassins after the flourishing Fir Park side continued their rousing renaissance.

Vigurs played an instrumental role in Well's hard-earned 1-0 victory over bottom-of-the-table Hearts at Tynecastle on Saturday as Stuart McCall's men racked up a sixth successive league victory in the top flight of the Scottish game for the first time in 77 years.

Motherwell face a stern test in their bid for a magnificent seven when they travel to Celtic Park this weekend but they will make the short trip up the M74 in buoyant mood.

The Steelmen sit third in the table, just a point behind second-placed Aberdeen and 10 clear of fourth-placed Dundee United.

Vigurs, 25, said: "It's been a bit under the radar but that's the way we like it. If we can continue that throughout the season, we will be very happy. It was quite right that Dundee United got all the attention when they were on a great run. They've got a really young side and they play great football. But we are happy to go along slowly and unheard. That'll do us fine."

Having been dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Albion Rovers, Motherwell were then left reeling on the ropes after a 5-0 pummeling by Celtic.

Since then, though, McCall's battlers have come out fighting and Vigurs insists there is plenty more to come.

He added: "Not much has changed. We've just got to know each other's games more. We knew we had to step it up and we have done that. We've clicked and the boys all know each other's best attributes.

"There were a lot of players who came in, myself included, and others went out. We've taken time to gel but it's happened now. We are getting there. The manager has been a calm head all season, even after the bad displays and bad results.

"He was relaxed and calm but he let us know it wasn't good enough and he said he needed to see a reaction from us. He said he knows we are all good players but that it was time to show it.

"We've got experienced boys in our dressing room and they've pulled us through. There's definitely more to come from us. We are ready for Celtic next week. They have a great side and it will be a good game. But we're going there to win.

"We've got the players to do it. Hopefully we can put on a good performance. We are ready for next week, there's no better time."

VIGURS was a major figure in Motherwell's latest triumph at the weekend and set up the decisive goal with five minutes of the first half remaining.

His telling pass through the Hearts defence was seized upon by John Sutton, who rounded the advancing keeper and scored from a tight angle.

Hearts' youngsters showed plenty of spirit and caused moments of concern in the Motherwell rearguard during the second period but the visitors remained resolute.

Delighted manager McCall said: "The lads have showed great character to bounce back. It's down to them that they've turned it round.

"We've got a tough run of fixtures coming up but we just have to keep ploughing away."
