Motherwell captain Keith Lasley admits he is delighted gaffer Stuart McCall is flying the Fir Park flag at Hampden after joining the Scotland coaching team.

The Steelmen skipper joked that there may be a chance for Well players to earn a call-up to the national side now that McCall is No.3 to Gordon Strachan, but there was no larking around when he said the appointment can be as beneficial to his club as it is to his country.

The former Scotland hero will aid attempts to change the fortunes of the national side, and Lasley for one is thrilled.

He said: "The gaffer had a good international career himself and the fact he has been there and done it at World Cups and European Championships means that he can bring a lot to the table.

"I am sure his input there will be appreciated. We might even get some players called up now!

"It is a compliment to Motherwell that our gaffer is working with the national team and there is no real surprise from our point of view because I think he has proven himself to be an excellent manager.

"It's another step for him. Coaching and working with the best players in the country and working alongside a manager of Gordon Strachan's calibre can only make him better as a coach as well.

"We as a club then get the benefit from that."

The other aspect is that the role McCall will fulfil with Scotland should not take him away from Motherwell for too long a stretch,

The Fir Park manager will be expected to contribute when Scotland are meeting for international games but he won't be overly taxed when the national team have a lull in fixtures.

"A lot of the time when there is an international week we are away from the place and we get a bit of a break anyway," said Lasley.

"I think it is essentially a part-time post and I've no doubt that he'll be able to marry any international commitments along with his post here without there being any problems."

Meanwhile, there is no game for Motherwell this weekend who are not in action until they face Dundee United on Tuesday evening at Fir Park.

McCall's side will get Saturday afternoon off but will be training on Sunday, and Lasley admits that he is a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to kick-off times.

"It's been a bit odd for us as we had the winter break. It feel as though we have hardly had any games at all. We had a good result last Sunday but now we have another Saturday off.

"Like most players, I'd ideally like to play every game at 3pm on a Saturday, but I can understand why it doesn't always work like that.

"The important thing is that when we are playing that we are picking up points and trying to make sure that we maintain the standard that we have set for ourselves."
