Danny Wilson’s appearance in the Co-op Insurance Cup Final could be the start of great things for the teenager at Rangers – just as it was for me back in 1970.
I was just 16 and had only made one first-team appearance – in a 5-0 win over Cowdenbeath at Ibrox when I scored two goals – when I was given the nod to play in the League Cup Final.
I had a dream the night before the game with Celtic that I would go out and score the winning goal – and I duly did so in what was an incredible start to my playing career with the Gers.
Danny, who is set to start against St Mirren this weekend due to the hamstring injury Madjid Bougherra has picked up in training, is not quite in the same position as I was all those years ago. The 18-year-old has played nearly 20 times at centre-half for Walter Smith’s team – including in some massive Champions League games.
