Will Rangers win the Treble?

And, if not, who will stop them from landing all three domestic trophies this season?

Well, you’ve got to say Walter Smith’s men have given themselves a wonderful opportunity to win everything in Scotland this term. With a bit of luck, I feel they could actually clinch it.

They are now in the final of the Co-operative Insurance Cup and, without being disrespectful to St Mirren, you would fully expect Rangers to emerge victorious at Hampden Park and secure the first piece of silverware on offer.

As far as the league is concerned, they are also currently 10 points clear at the top of the table and in the driving seat. I’m not saying for a second it is over but the Ibrox club are in an extremely strong position.

Of course, they are still in the Scottish Cup and given their record in the cup competitions since Smith took over for a second time, you’ve got to say they’ll have an excellent chance of winning that, too.

So, yes, Rangers can win the Treble. And, as much as you’ll never hear the manager or any of the players saying that they think they’ll win it, you can rest assured it is very much a target for each and every one of them.

I managed to win it twice during my own playing days and it was a fantastic feeling to win everything on offer.

We felt we were the best team in the country at that time and were confident of doing so from the start of the campaign.

Sometimes you just get a feeling that it is going to be your year and nothing will stop you and that was certainly the case back then.

The problem, of course, is it only takes one bad day at the office to kill the dream.

Right now, the league is the priority. This is the last time the winners of the Scottish Premier League will go straight into the Champions League and with the money at stake, that means everything to both Rangers and Celtic.

And, with the gap Rangers have managed to open up, you’ve got to say they are in a strong position. The one thing we know is Celtic are going to come roaring back now and can’t afford to drop any more points.

If the gap increases, you’ve got to say it is all over for Tony Mowbray’s men.

But it isn’t over as yet and fair play to Rangers captain Davie Weir for warning all his team-mates of that after they watched Celtic lose to Kilmarnock.

You can’t afford to take you eye off the ball and become complacent. For Rangers, it is simply about taking one game at a time, doing whatever is required to win, and moving on.

The biggest concern for Smith will be injuries and suspensions. Although he has enough cover in some areas of the team, he doesn’t have much in others and that could prove their downfall.

But his team have developed a winning mentality as they’ve only lost one league game all season and much of that is down to the manager.

Yes, they aren’t a great footballing team and Smith would be the first to admit that. But you don’t have to play pretty football to be successful. Time, of course, will prove just how successful Rangers can be.

Heroes of yesteryear marked out for Fame...

Rangers will intake the latest batch of inductees to their Hall of Fame at a glamour dinner later this month.

And some of my former team-mates, such as Derek Parlane, Ian Redford and Ally Dawson are all in the frame to join the players like myself who have been fortunate enough to have been included already.

I’d be especially delighted to see Derek included to the Hall of Fame as I stayed with him and his family when I first moved down to Glasgow and we have been close friends ever since.

The dinner takes place at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow on Sunday, February 21, and anyone interested in coming along should contact the Rangers events team on 0871 702 1972.

All hail super Saints of Gus

Gus MacPherson deserves great credit for leading St Mirren to the Co-operative Insurance Cup final.

After taking the Paisley club back into the SPL, he has managed to keep them there ever since despite the fact he is working with one of the smallest budgets in the top flight.

I can’t ever recall him spending any money whatsoever on a new player and over the years he has watched some of his best men leave.

Supporters at every club have huge expectations but Buddies really should appreciate what he has done for their team.

It can’t be easy working on a shoestring budget for a board of directors who are looking to sell the club.

But fair play to Gus and his assistant, Andy Millen for their efforts.

St Mirren are always an extremely well organised side, they play decent football and now their fans have a day out at Hampden Park to look forward to.

It’s going to be terribly difficult for them to win the competition with Rangers now in the final as well, but maybe just getting there will highlight how impressive a manager MacPherson is.

Walt right to speak out

Walter Smith was right to again point out the financial difficulties at Ibrox.

Even if Rangers win the league title and gain entry to the Champions League next season, it doesn’t mean everything is going to be much better in the summer.

As manager, he has to let the supporters know what the state of play is.

And, if things remain unchanged come the summer, it won’t be good for Rangers and further cuts will be required.

However, I am still confident the club will be under the control of new ownership by the end of the season.

There are things happening behind the scenes, I’m hearing bits and pieces here and there without knowing anything concrete.

I think something will happen on that front in the next month or two.

And what a massive lift that would give the Rangers supporters, management and players if it were to happen as they are still pushing for the championship and other trophies.
