SPORTSWIDE: Kaymer proves a tough act to follow

Padraig Harrington was full of praise for Martin Kaymer after the German landed the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship by eight-shots.

Harrington, disqualified from the event after the first round, said: “He’s probably the most formidable player in the world when he is leading.

“He seems to intimidate the rest of the field into believing if he gets in front, he’ll win.” The victory means Europe now has the two top-ranked players in the world in Lee Westwood and Kaymer, who is now No.2 The next big event is the Dubai Desert Classic in two weeks, an event in which Tiger Woods is expected to play. Ireland’s Rory McIlroy will hope to be a factor there as well, it was the scene of his only European Tour victory so far, after finishing a distant runner-up in Abu Dhabi. The 21-year-old was delighted by his move from 12th to world No.7 in his first outing of the year, but Kaymer was in a different league. “Very impressive, he was in total control of his ball,” said McIlroy. It was Kaymer’s third win in the event in four years and that prompted the organisers to give him the trophy to keep. GRIDIRON: Pittsburgh Steelers will play against the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl in Dallas early next month. The Steelers silenced the tough-talking New York Jets with a 24-19 win in the AFC Championship, while Green Bay overcame the Chicago Bears 21-14. This will be the Steelers third trip to the Super Bowl in six years. WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Glasgow City have signed Scotland attacking player Christie Murray from Celtic.
