The Glaswegian will lead a motley crew on a voyage across the universe in a new sci-fi series based on the hit Stargate movie and TV franchise.
That move will pave the way for a rival to take control of the Tardis when the next Doctor is announced later this week.
Full Monty star Carlyle, who lives in the West End, will star in Stargate Universe as Dr David Rush, the mysterious leader of a group of soldiers and civilians stranded on a spaceship in the remote reaches of space after passing through the legendary stargate.
The new 20 -part series for the Sci Fi Channel goes into production early next year The BBC is expected to announce the successor to David Tennant on Thursday after the Paisley actor decided to move on from the hit primetime show.
Carlyle will hope to avoid the fate of his Trainspotting collaborators Danny Boyle, John Hodge and Andrew Macdonald, whose Alien Love Triangle disappeared without a trace.
