For a start, you could not fail to have noticed that it was the Sub Club's 25th birthday.

A myriad of stars have pushed the limits of the Jamaica Street basement's soundsystem this year alone, never mind in the quarter-century it's been keeping Glasgow dancing.

The highlights were many: Blawan causing utter devastation on a Tuesday night at i AM, Seth Troxler making his Subbie debut, Carl Craig's Scottish debut and Optimo's resurrection as a bi-monthly affair just some of them.

Is it too much to ask for another 25 years?

In keeping with Argyle Street-area anniversaries, it was The Arches' 21st.

Along with cementing its status as a cultural powerhouse, it had memorable gigs aplenty: Simian Mobile Disco in November, the ridiculous (or romantic, depending on how you see things) Angerfist at BTTF's St Valentine's party, Mylo's return at Celtic Connections, and A$AP Rocky to name a few.

It's also the time of year to think of those no longer with us, and Glasgow lost two very different, very popular club nights in 2012.

The most obvious is Death Disco, which went out in typically energetic style just this month after a decade of debauchery.

We also said goodbye to Pinup Nights, the monthly indie disco at The Flying Duck, who left us after eight years and just about as many venues.

In this age of nostalgia, maybe it won't be too long before we see an Optimo-style resuscitation.

In the meantime, we end the year with a visit to Hummingbird, where we asked the clubbers how they were planning to see in the New Year...
